Thank you for visiting our website.

    Welcome Message

It is our great pleasure to invite all social welfare workers, practitioners, scholars and policy makers to the Joint World Conference on Social Work Education and Social Development 2022 (SWESD 2022), to be held from October 26 to 28 in Seoul, Korea. This year’s conference will be organized under the main theme of “Redefining Social Policy and Social Work Practice in a Post-Pandemic Society: Social Welfare Programs and Social Work Education at a Crossroads.”

Following the Joint World Conference on Social Work Education and Social Development 2016, it is also an honor to be able to hold the conference in Korea again this year. As in 2016, I look forward to successful international discussions and exchange and cooperation at this year’s conference.

Due to the pandemic situation that has been going on for more than two years, various new social issues such as distribution problems, and the use of Information and Communication Technologies(ICT) have emerged around the world. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic has left bigger and more challenges to the fields of social development and social welfare. In some countries, many people suffered from poverty due to sluggish economic activities after the outbreak of COVID-19 and in some countries, the inequality situation, which has been deteriorating since the 1990’s, has worsened further due to the pandemic. In order to respond to the changing needs of society members, various changes and developments were also required to not only policy makers but also practitioners and scholars in social welfare sector.

As the largest conference representing the international social welfare community, we expect this year’s conference to be an opportunity to discuss and find solutions to new social issues as well as existing issues in each field with active participation of various social welfare officials from all over the world.

Please join us in Seoul, Korea and online platform. We look forward to seeing you!

    Dr. Sang-Mok Suh
President of International Council on Social Welfare

It is a great pleasure to invite you to participate in this conference: “Redefining social policy and social work practice in a post-pandemic society. Social welfare, social work education and social policy at a crossroads”

IASSW and ICSW have partnered to organize this international conference to share information, experiences, and reflections on what has been the effects of the pandemic that has affected the world. The pandemic has accentuated the weakness of our social and health policies, required that we adapt our policies and practices and change our educational systems to cope with the on-going effects of COVID 19. When we started to plan this conference, we did not know that another horrific event, the war against Ukraine, would create new distressing conditions in the world, adding new tension and suffering to the other conflicts present today. We know that crisis is not only something that brings instability, difficulty, and danger, but can also mean opportunity, which can be seen as a crucial turning point in our routine and daily practices.

What have we learned during this difficult time? Which kinds of innovations have we experimented with in education and practice? What are the consequences of the Covid pandemic in various sectors? What policies have been developed to face old and new challenges? How can social workers and social welfare practitioners become front line actors in supporting dialogue and peace?

During the conference we will try to answer these questions. To better organize our work, we have created several themes:

    1. Groups in vulnerable situations: the quest for social protection
    2. Social Work Education and Empowerment
    3. Social Work Practice in times of crises
    4. Social Transformation Community Engagement and SDGs
    5. Digitalization and ICTs in Social Development and social work education
    6. New Opportunities and Challenges in Post-COVID Period

Each of these themes will be developed in more specific subthemes.

We are inviting academics, researchers, professionals, and policy makers to submit abstracts for presentation and to participate in this conference. The conference will be delivered in a hybrid model.

Although we are looking forward to meeting all of you in person, we understand some of you face constraints that will require you to participate in the conference virtually. We are confident that your active presence and participation will contribute to creating new knowledge, forging links, building and strengthening networks, developing new research groups, and suggesting ideas for innovating policies and practices.

Mark your calendars for the 30th of June 2022, the deadline for submission of abstracts and October 26th-28th, 2022 for your participation the conference.

President of International Association of Schools of Social Work
